An Exercise Program

The Fort Wayne Parkinson Support Group has an exercise and therapy program geared especially for the PD patient at Turnstone, 3320 N. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The program is patterned after the PARK program developed by Bob Kahn of Rockford, Ohio.
Exercises for flexibility and mobility and practice in safe performance of the activities of daily living are included.
The classes are conducted at the Turnstone Center facilitated by a Physical Therapy Associate, or a qualified trainer under the supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist.
The group therapy sessions will commence after each participant has had an initial evaluation by a licensed Physical Therapist at Turnstone to establish a baseline and eligibility for the program.
The evaluation must be ordered by a doctor's prescription.
After you have obtained your doctor's prescription, an appointment for the evaluation can be made by contacting Marilyn Wedder, at Turnstone 260-483-2100.
The cost of the evaluation is $25.
This includes the cost of handouts describing the exercises.
The therapy sessions are scheduled weekly.
A minimum of 10 participants are required.
The charge is $10/month per PD patient, paid in advance.

The requirements to participate are:
  • Participant will be able to do 45-60 minutes of activity and/or exercises.
  • Participant will be able to ambulate safely.
  • Participant will demonstrate ability to safely sit down and stand,and to remain standing balanced with support.
  • Participant will be able to transition from sitting to standing independently.
  • Participant will have sufficient muscle strength and range of motion to perform active exercises of all extremities and trunk.
  • Participant must be able to comprehend directions including written, verbal and visual demonstrations.
